So you want to know our story?
Let us start by saying thank you for taking the time to visit our website. Now for the story on our culinary journey together.

My Kind of Chefs was founded by Executive Chef Steve Abeysinghe who passionately
believe that restaurant quality gourmet food can be made and served in every off-site catering
setting, not just at hatted boutique restaurants and we are very excited to share them with you.

In Steve’s relentless pursuit of authentic ‘fresh’ Sri Lankan gourmet cuisine, Steve began to notice the food that was served at private functions by most caterers here in Melbourne was stale, packaged, waxy and flavourless food that was becoming the norm.

So, Steve decided to combine his love for honest Sri Lankan  food into a delicious business venture. Partnering with his wife Zara for ‘My Kind of Chefs’, together they set out to create a Boutique Catering Business that would have a positive impact on the Sri Lankan community and truly change the Melbourne's Sri Lankan catering landscape for the better. Now, together they are showcasing their flair for authentic Sri Lankan cuisine that wows with fresh bold flavours and dynamic presentations.
A visionary who roped it all in together.
As one of Melbourne’s most creative culinary minds, Steve brings more than 25 years of hospitality experience to ‘My Kind of Chefs’. During his tenure, Steve has held numerous food service executive and kitchen management positions, including banquet coordination and production in some of the world's best five star hotels and hatted restaurants in Asia, Middle East and here in Melbourne.

Originally from the beautiful Island of Sri Lanka, Steve left behind an established culinary career to become a renowned chef in Australia. After obtaining a formal qualification in Commercial Cookery here in Australia, it wasn’t long before Steve started climbing the ranks in the Kitchen, working with some of Melbourne’s best chefs and restaurateurs at award-winning establishments.

In addition to cooking for ‘My Kind of Chefs’, Steve also serves as the Executive Chef to a reputed Function Centre & Café here in Melbourne.

Oh yes, and he's much friendlier in person.
So as the saying goes; behind every successful chef,
there's a woman keeping the kitchen fires burning.
This is very true with Zara behind ‘My Kind of Chefs’ kitchen.

Zara, a self-taught chef and culinary artist in contemporary cuisine, found her passion for cooking at a very early age. She was raised in the family kitchen full of inspired cooks, so at family get-togethers meal prep was the event. And "prep" meant accompanying her mum to the local farmer’s market to buy fresh produce for the big family event. This family culture
proved to be very influential. It inspired her appreciation for farm fresh food, exposed her to a wide variety of regional cuisines and taught her the importance of cooking fresh. She loves to merge cooking techniques and elements from all over the world to create interesting, synergistic, and flavourful dishes.

Calling herself the official taste-tester for My Kind of Chefs, Zara's speciality in the kitchen is taking simple farm fresh ingredients and turning them into elegant and transporting dishes.

the team behind the gears and cogs..
Behind the spinning gears and cogs of ‘My Kind of Chefs’ is a vibrant team of passionate, multi-discipline professionals, roped in from a cross section of the culinary and hospitality industry at all tiers of the company’s value chain - who couldn't be more diverse even if they tried.
Like most culinary entrepreneurs, we floated our business with one big goal in mind; to create a catering service that provide honest gourmet food paired with concierge-level service to the discerning food aficionados of Melbourne.

Somewhere along the way, things got a bit different. We soon realized, running a catering business is also a lot like starting a family. For us at ‘My Kind of Chefs’, it's not all about the money; money is good, but values are great! It's more about the values…, about the people we work with and the customers we serve.  It's about our team members; who have gone from being our contract staff to trusted friends and neighbours.
our philosophy.
